A night away - Parador de Aiguablava
Do you want to find a special hotel driving through Barcelona to France? Here it is! Just leave the motorway at Girona and make your way east to the coast through the lovely country landscape until you reach Aiguablava, a town nestled in pine forests, hidden from the ordinary tourist. It takes an hour’s drive from the motorway.
There is a growing, refreshing smell of the sea before you turn through pine trees to see the hotel sitting high on the rock. The hotel is a modern building, with windows on all sides, so the sense and colour of the sea engulfs the whole hotel and all rooms have excellent views. Our room was overlooking the bay.
We enjoyed a lovely late lunch on the balcony, watching the small boats go by and amazed at the colour of the sea against the green pines.
Later it was lovely to have a swim in the outdoor pool, and enjoy a drink on the terrace looking out to sea.
We checked about dinner and had a choice of two restaurants. One – within the hotel, and the second, called “Mar y Vent” a gentle walk down through the pines to a neighbouring cove.
We sat on the terrace and enjoyed wonderful seafood, and looked out into the sunset. It was easy to relax the next morning, reading on the sunny terrace after an excellent breakfast in the hotel.
This is a place to rest and relax, and take walks in the countryside or relax on the beach, which had soft, creamy sand. It was difficult to drag ourselves away from this “hidden gem” of a hotel, and drive south back home.
